MTN Nigeria has emerged as the leading telecommunications provider in terms of subscriber porting activity, surpassing Airtel, Globacom, and 9Mobile from January to May 2023.
Based on data from Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, MTN attracted a significant number of subscribers, with a total of 8,999 individuals joining their service during the first five months of the year. In comparison, Airtel recorded 2,328 subscribers during the same period, while Globacom and 9Mobile reported 1,117 and 477 subscribers, respectively.
The implementation of number portability has played a crucial role in this trend, as it allows subscribers to switch networks while retaining their phone numbers. This feature has prompted analysts to anticipate a substantial shift of subscribers towards networks that offer superior service quality. In response, network operators have been focusing on enhancing the capacity of their networks to prevent a mass exodus of subscribers to other competitors.
However, it is worth noting that a total of 11,927 telecom users opted to switch their service providers, engaging in port-out activities across various networks. Within this group, 9Mobile led the way by gaining the highest number of subscribers, with 8,465 users choosing to switch to a different network.
