Worried that a stolen phone could mean a stolen digital life? Apple’s got your back. The latest iOS 17.3 beta introduces Stolen Device Protection, a game-changer for iPhone security. This feature adds an extra layer of defense against opportunistic thieves, even if they crack your passcode.
The Problem: Passcode Isn’t Enough
Remember those unsettling reports of thieves discreetly observing iPhone passcodes in public? This vulnerability allowed them to access sensitive data like iCloud Keychain passwords and even turn off Find My iPhone, leaving victims helpless. Stolen Device Protection shuts this loophole.
Here’s How It Works:
-
Biometrics Take Center Stage: Enable Stolen Device Protection, and Face ID or Touch ID become mandatory for accessing critical actions, even with the passcode. This includes:
- Viewing and using iCloud Keychain passwords and passkeys
- Applying for or viewing Apple Card details
- Disabling Lost Mode or erasing the device
- Managing sensitive wallet actions
- Setting up new devices with your iPhone
-
Double the Lock for Extra Sensitive Actions: For truly crucial operations, like changing your Apple ID password, Stolen Device Protection adds a one-hour security delay on top of biometric authentication. This gives you time to react if your phone falls into the wrong hands. No delay occurs in familiar locations like home or work, ensuring convenience for everyday use.
Activating Your Defense:
- Opt-in under Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection.
- Beta testers will see a preview prompt after installation. This won’t appear in the public release.
What Devices Are Covered?
- iOS 17 compatibility: Stolen Device Protection works on iPhone XS and newer models.
- Public release: Expect it in January or February 2024.
Stay safe, stay informed, and keep your digital life secure with iOS 17.3’s empowering Stolen Device Protection!
